Краткое содержание: консерваторы преувеличивают роль Рейгана, манипулируют ею, и не понимают ее. Он действовал вовсе не силой, а умной дипломатией, переговорами. А потом Истазию победил Горбачев.

Там прямо из того же Тайма есть цитата, Строб Тальбот объясняет, почему никак невозможно надеяться, что США могут экономически победить СССР, и как Рейгана хочет просто победить с позиций силы, вместо того, чтобы типа, сесть, и все перетереть. Собственно, Тальбот там все это описывал как "соперничество" супердержав. Это сейчас Обама поминает тиранию. Israel and the United States on Thursday held a successful test of the Arrow anti-ballistic missile system - the world's only operational missile killer system - off the coast of California

The realistic test of the Arrow ABM system was the first of its kind and had been planned for two years.

Aryeh Herzog, in charge of the project at the Defense Ministry and the Israel Air Force, said that "we are all happy. The operational implication [of the test] is that the Air Force has an exceptional system.
"We have known it all along, but now we have added proof. We will continue development. We want to achieve capabilities against future threats, such as those being developed in Iran."

Here are just some quotes I've collected over the last few days. I am somewhat tired to hear how stupid Reagan was, how he did not know what he was doing, how he simply got lucky with the fall of the USSR (Георгий Бовт из Известий долго рассуждал про Иванушку-дурачка, который сам того не ведая...). Most idiotic claim is that USSR was doomed from the beginning and everyone knew that. Ok, fine, now, whoiever "knew that" in 1980 and has a quote to prove it - please, raise your hand! Whoever was not surprised at all when the Soviet Union collapsed - step forward and be recognized!

Here is a story from Ronald Reagan's "The Shining City Upon A Hill" speech, January 25, 1974. Although I've seen other versions of the story that differ in details, it's not important. The essence is the same. Besides, it is interesting how Ronald Reagan saw it.

In the meantime, men who yearned to breathe free were making their way to our shores. Among them was a young refugee from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He had been a leader in an attempt to free Hungary from Austrian rule. The attempt had failed and he fled to escape execution. In America, this young Hungarian, Koscha by name, became an importer by trade and took out his first citizenship papers. One day, business took him to a Mediterranean port. There was a large Austrian warship under the command of an admiral in the harbor. He had a manservant with him. He had described to this manservant what the flag of his new country looked like. Word was passed to the Austrian warship that this revolutionary was there and in the night he was kidnapped and taken aboard that large ship. This man's servant, desperate, walking up and down the harbor, suddenly spied a flag that resembled the description he had heard. It was a small American war sloop. He went aboard and told Captain Ingraham, of that war sloop, his story. Captain Ingraham went to the American Consul. When the American Consul learned that Koscha had only taken out his first citizenship papers, the consul washed his hands of the incident. Captain Ingraham said, "I am the senior officer in this port and I believe, under my oath of my office, that I owe this man the protection of our flag."

He went aboard the Austrian warship and demanded to see their prisoner, our citizen. The Admiral was amused, but they brought the man on deck. He was in chains and had been badly beaten. Captain Ingraham said, "I can hear him better without those chains," and the chains were removed. He walked over and said to Kocha, "I will ask you one question; consider your answer carefully. Do you ask the protection of the American flag?" Kocha nodded dumbly "Yes," and the Captain said, "You shall have it." He went back and told the frightened consul what he had done. Later in the day three more Austrian ships sailed into harbor. It looked as though the four were getting ready to leave. Captain Ingraham sent a junior officer over to the Austrian flag ship to tell the Admiral that any attempt to leave that harbor with our citizen aboard would be resisted with appropriate force. He said that he would expect a satisfactory answer by four o'clock that afternoon. As the hour neared they looked at each other through the glasses. As it struck four he had them roll the cannons into the ports and had then light the tapers with which they would set off the cannons -- one little sloop. Suddenly the lookout tower called out and said, "They are lowering a boat," and they rowed Koscha over to the little American ship.

Captain Ingraham then went below and wrote his letter of resignation to the United States Navy. In it he said, "I did what I thought my oath of office required, but if I have embarrassed my country in any way, I resign." His resignation was refused in the United States Senate with these words: "This battle that was never fought may turn out to be the most important battle in our Nation's history." Incidentally, there is to this day, and I hope there always will be, a USS Ingraham in the United States Navy.

I did not tell that story out of any desire to be narrowly chauvinistic or to glorify aggressive militarism, but it is an example of government meeting its highest responsibility.

Все же - трудно ребятам. Надо же как-то объяснить - почему за него проголосовали 49 штатов из 50. А выдавить из себя - что именно он коммуникировал, и отчего там глаза искрились - не выходит. Сделали небольшой коллажик "юмор Рейгана". Xa-xa. Если CNN (и, судя по всему, New York Times) верить, то американцы проголосуют за юмориста с искоркой, который им доходчиво свои юморные шутки скоммуникирует. Джерри Сейнфельд, вероятно, собрал бы все 50 штатов.
Один умник сообщил, мол, при Рейгане закончилась холодная война, а нам, историкам, известно, что она должна была закончиться, просто вот он уловил и поучаствовал. Конец цитаты. Именно. А при Жукове и Эйзенхауре, вероятно, закончилась Вторая Мировая, а им, историкам, ясный пень, известно, что она и так должна была закончиться... Не совсем понятно, где эти историки были, когда Рейган заявил, что в Холодной войне надо победить и он знает - как. Вероятно, кричали, что он безумный ковбой, идиот, который только испортит отношение к США всего мира, втянет в войну и вона - какие страшные демонстрации в Европе против Першингов... Эдак лет через тридцать мы услышим от очередного провидца, что ему, историку, очевидно, что война с террорисмом должна была закончиться, и что вовсе не Буш ее вел, а типа, терроризм сам себя исчерпал. Ну, как Советский Союз...

На WABC услышал Пегги Нунан. ГОворит - дольше недели нашей прессе не выдержать. Ну, не смогут они хвалить Рейгана даже за искорку в глазах - более семи дней. Думает, к следующей субботе они сорвутся и начнут обкладывать и его и Буша.

Update: совсем забыл. И забыл - кто это была. Какая-то либеральная конгресс-вуман. Она смогла объяснить, что именно он "коммуникировал". Вот, говорит, он был таааакой оптимист, что убедил американцев, что им не нужно большое правительство, правительственная помощь и высокие налоги - и нам до сих пор приходится народ разубеждать... Я не шучу. Она так сказала. Жаль, забыл имя.
